Challenge Yourself to Live Out and Model These Values

Speak up against hate, which is an intentional or unintentional put down (or worse) towards an individual or a group.

When you hurt someone:

1. Focus on understanding the impact you had. 

2. Take responsibility: acknowledge and apologize for the negative impact you had. 

3. If you are clear about how you can make this right / avoid this / do better in the future, name that commitment.

   When you experience someone hurting you or others:

1. Breathe deeply and ground yourself. Avoid getting reactive, which could increase the person’s defensiveness. 

2. Ask: “Can we talk about what just happened?” or “What just happened didn’t sit right with me – are you open to talking about that?” or “Can I share a different perspective on what you said?”

3. Be sure to focus specifically on the person’s exact actions or words they used, rather than who they are as a person.

Listen & learn from each other.

1. Give the gift of attention. In our fast paced world, taking the time to listen to another conveys kindness & respect.

2. Be ready to hear another’s story without trying to fix or change them. Just be present.

3. Reach out beyond your circle of friends, family and beliefs to get to know our whole community. Attend a community event that widens your perspective.
